2yr Staffordshire Bull Terrier

When you think Staffordshire Bullterrier the first thing the springs to mind is something along the line of:

‘Great with people, hates every dog’

or

‘Batshit crazy, hurricane made of bricks’

For Nola, some of the latter options definitely apply here, BUT!

When it comes to her temperament around dogs? I can only describe it as ‘Dotty’.

The similarities in their behaviour are remarkable!

The same ‘dogs are meh’ attitude, the same determination to communicate what she wants, what she doesn’t want and the same level of stubbornness when things don’t go her way 😂.

I feel that Nola has been hanging around with the wrong crowd for a little too long. Fun fun fun just isn’t Nolas vibe when it comes to other dogs! So truly filling the void in Nolas life needs to come from giving her true satisfaction and enrichment from her parents.

Dotty tolerates all of my bullshit because at the end of the day, no matter what, she can communicate what she needs from me and I will deliver the goods eventually 😂.

It’s a contract I signed with her from the first day I got her and trust me on this …she holds me to it everyday and your dogs do too.

Nola joining our Pack has been a complete non-event, the perfect outcome for any dog trainer. Blending in perfectly and stealthy like a second Dotty 😂, but for Nola, I feel that The Pack is a ‘nice to have’, and there is a void in her life that can only be filled by leaders who can set the rules, and reliably communicate the path to success

There is a little diamond hiding within Nola, and I am going to make it my mission to show her parents how to make it sparkle✨

Albert has been away for a while…

Having an unfortunate accident following our first visit, Albert has been slowly recovering from a broken leg over the past 4 months.

Albert is now triple his size since we last saw him and fortunately, there has been no lasting damage to his confidence, energy and temperament during his time in isolation. Albert has however missed out on a lot of critical socialisation and outdoor experiences so we have made this our top priority!

Albert has met first real friend outside of his immediate family and it was a joy to watch! With his super high intelligence, confidence and social drive, it’s time to culture this little stunner into a well rounded advocate of his breed.

Not easy being this tiny…
Everybody is big, scary and out to take all you hold dear from you.

This is the unfortunate predicament Ralph has found himself in. Surrounded by giants and with the misfortune of having a dog field located beside his favourite walking spot, Ralph has developed a savage desire to protect his possessions, his toys and even his parents with the tenacity of a lion.

This has worked for him in all of the wrong ways, developing some heavy reinforcement for bark, lunging and nipping at his perceived potential thieves. Due to his location, constantly exposed to super high arousal, hyper and excitable dogs, fence fighting and oncoming threats. Ralph needs a break!

And we have given him one! A few weeks of decompression in lower traffic locations. His parents are learning how to lead him instead of allowing him to rehearse possession of them and Ralph is beginning to learn there is more life than his most valuable possessions.

We have started the transition into learning about dogs. Not every dog wants to invade his space and take his things and not every dog will tolerate him taking theirs.

This week Ralph has been on his biggest adventure yet! Dotty is teaching some valuable life lessons and he is learning not everything is out to get him, or his precious things.

Over the past few months I’ve been watching a struggle going on. One between a young Labrador Retriever named Reggie, and a pet parent who is desperate to do her very best for him as they are transitioning through a rough patch with his pulling strength and occasional reactivity towards dogs.

She’s trying everything, and I mean EVERYTHING….all at once.

Hours online researching training videos, kitted up to high water with all the best training gear and tasty treats. Hyper-focusing on every tail wag, every lip lick, any possible look of intent would trigger a response that I could only describe as every possible online influencer 60 second training video all at once 😆.

After passing a ‘hot spot’ on Reggie’s usual walk spot, seeing nothing but a jolly Labrador fed up of mum suddenly breaking out in interpretative dance every time a dog walks past….He just wants to sniff a few trees and pee in a few bushes.

We had Corrine’s son, little Roman join us for the session. Keen to get involved and eager to watch and learn. And following a non eventful walk past his ‘hot spot’ it was clear to see what the problem was:

…over thinking and through months of repeated struggle, a mindset from both dog and owner that ‘something will probably kick off today’

For the rest of the session, I gave Reggie to Roman, taught him how to speak to Reggie in a way he understands and watched the magic happen, why? because Roman has one thing on his mind:

“I wanna walk the dog!”

No the past 20 experiences of struggle and anxiety. No pre-conceived zones where he was expecting Reggie to do backflips across the street towards a dog, no phones, no ‘6 easy steps to stop your dog pulling’, no thinking about all of the troubles adult life throws at you, just…..’Me and you buddy, lets walk’

There is no simpler thought you can give to a dog that will make them ask you two things:

1) When are WE going?
2) How do WE get there?

Just a kid 100% committed to helping a dog, and a dog 100% committed to helping a kid, get through this little adventure together.

Hyper active, Hyper motivated and hyper intelligent!
This handsome boy was re-homed at 4 months old and has missed out on some critical socialisation and training.

His energy and drive requires some serious maintenance to keep him happy, healthy and stable.

Although not reactive, his lack of experience and interaction with dogs combined with his intense energy and a little bit of teenage cheekiness had lead to some severe frustration pulling and issues on lead.

He’s a little bit clueless when it comes to dogs, going in at 100% is landing him in trouble with the lads, and the ladies running for the hills to avoid him.

Fortunately we have a gang able to keep up with him, and eager to teach him a few lessons. We are giving him a job (hint hint he likes to retrieve things 😂) and some solid lessons on lead to help this young lad and his dedicated owners harness the insane amount of potential this boy has. Stay tuned!

A few announcements to make:

I will be going away this weekend so I wont be available on here. I have created new classes up until the end of the season with some adjustments to our program as I am currently working a 7-day week at the moment. Those of you who have still have pre-booked sessions please send me your dates and i will get you book on.

- Looking ahead, I currently have a waiting list for new dogs wanting to join our amazing community and get help with their dogs, next season I am going to be looking into running a behavioural WEEK the last week of every month where clients can book in and get the 1-2-1 tune-ups they need to progress further with their training.

- ExPAWditions will be returning in April on Mondays and fridays! For those who aren’t in the know these a FULL DAY Pack adventures where we take the dogs out of Manchester and on some REAL adventures around the greenbelt, beaches, hillsides and reservoirs! Myself, Dotty and Roxy have been working hard since January scouting out the best locations and routes and I cannot wait to show you what we have been getting up to.

- We have our first group training session coming up on Saturday 30th March, come along, train with your dogs as one big pack

- Finally, I will be taking a full week off training from 31st March to get some much needed rest and cry about how old im getting 😢. There will be no sessions that week.

THIS! Is socialisation!

Not the most frilling of videos … no happy wagging tails, no dogs doing backflips, no pack on another epic adventure.

It’s the boring stuff! Just me, a Doberman puppy and a carpark full of people, dogs and cyclists. However it’s usually the boring stuff that makes the difference!

A common misconception with the term socialisation is that it’s simply getting your dog amongst other dogs so they don’t end up feral and reactive when they become older.

Not only is this COMPLETELY the wrong approach, but it’s completely missing out the most important aspect of getting your dog used to the big scary world around them.

We have a little catching up to do for Luna, but she is making significant progress in her communication, resilience and focus. Absorbing the world around her a little bit at a time.

Invest your time with the boring stuff, invest in the repetition, invest in your dogs future freedom and confidence.

From the I stepped into the house, I knew we have a little star in the making here.

Luna has the motivation, the drive and potential the be an incredible advocate for the breed!

Today has been a super in-depth look into Lunas life, management and routine to give her parents the best possible tools, management techniques and communication the help them become confident leaders for this highly capable breed.

We are prioritising breed fulfilment, environmental socialisation, structured routine, and some quality time with some balanced dogs throughout Lunas development to give her the best possible start in life!

Øde throughout his maturing phase (and with best intentions) has fell subject to some of the many pitfalls of an over-reliance on commercialised ‘doggy daycares’. A place where rules, boundaries and limitations go to die.

Unfortunately the vast majority of dogs who go to these generally come unbalanced, full of excitement and arousal and are left to figure out the intricacies of canine etiquette all by themselves.

As fun as they can seem for your dog, it’s important to understand that WE need to be the main source of fulfilment in their lives. It’s OUR responsibility to advocate for our dogs and show them appropriate ways to act upon their impulses.

Poor Øde has landed himself in a spot of bother now he is in his rebellious teenage phase, associating every dog as his plaything, acting upon impulse without purpose, engaging with his world in the only way he understands…..I want that!

From being told he could never leave the house again from a rescue assigned ‘Veterinary Behaviourist’ to being a well established Pack Member and a very good boy for mum.

Denial of proven techniques and avoiding problems, and bits of cheese will never resolve deeply ingrained behaviours and lack of exercise and fulfilment.

It takes patience, hard work and strong leadership, you have to put in the time and effort and thankfully this little rascal has landed on his feet by finding such a dedicated and loving family. Great job Marley!

Buddy will be emigrating to Samoa in the near future to reunite with his dad, for the time being, Dotty Dogs will teaching him some life skills, leash manners and Pack Dynamics to prepare him for his new home.

What a fine young gentleman!

A month ago, our long-time Pack Member Charlie the Cockerpoo found himself suddenly sharing his home with his new little (soon to be very big) brother.

They have taken to each other like peas in a pod and having now settled in, its time for everybody to start learning some of the things owners need to be considering when taking in a multiple dog household.

Alberts genetics are clearly shining through. He is incredibly smart, and presents himself with a playful swagger as he goes about building his relationships with his big brother, and his new leaders. Due to some untimely vaccination schedule however, Alberts critical socialisation period is quickly closing and we need to focus on giving him some social robustness, environmental exposure and how to behave around dogs other than his older brother.

Albert and Charlie need to learn how to share resources, share their parents love and attention and adapt to living both with, and without each other’s company.

Towards the end of our session we had Dotty, the only dog Albert has had any social interaction with to work her magic 🪄. Not every dog is a Charlie, not every dog is a play thing and as always, my sidekick is more than willing to deliver some vital life skills to this highly intelligent, highly capable young gentleman.

This time of year, I tend to get a little moody 😂, more somber, more dry in my humour and sometimes a little more heavy on the NSFW faux pas.

Its the time of year the memories come flooding back, the good, the bad and the sometimes very very ugly 🫣. The time of year my brothers and sisters come together and remember the days gone past, and the family no longer with us.

The time of year we pay respect to those who fought so hard for the freedoms we have today.

This Sunday, there will be no sessions, for I feel compelled to continue this tradition, this duty. And for a few hours at least, reunite with my other family. 🫡
